Critically Reading Video

https://uhs.berkeley.edu/public-service-announcements

This PSA will inform others of what are some signs of living a healthy lifestyle on a college campus. It looks as if they will point out some strategies you can use if you’re ever in one of many different situations. I chose this PSA because it looks like a very creditable and reliable source to use.

It talks about how “Lisa” has a lot of stress and a lot on her plate such as school, work, bills, deadlines and sleep !! The pressure that is put on Lisa causes her to be overwhelmed, even when its early in the day. In the psa it showed me that one way I can manage my stress. The first method is to remove yourself from stressful environments and relive the tension by being active. Another method you can use to cope with stress is to relieve tension by mediation or practice deep breathing exercises.

I would say this video uses logos, and ethos more than pathos. By using logos they are giving us several different scenarios of what can happen to us while in school and how we should deal with it. Ethos is demonstrated a lot during this video, as you watch the psa you can see Lisa is feeling all different types of emotions. It allowed them to give others some coping methods when you are feeling stressed out, overwhelmed, and even not sure how to prioritize our goals and achievements.

This psa does make sense to me, it addresses common issues college students tend to experience over their time enrolled. Connections can be made to the psa I am creating because they talk about somethings I can also express during my psa. Realizing you need to be able to time manage throughout your day is important. We’re all human, we all need time to relax, stay positive and make time for yourself but also give yourself time to get what you need done, done.

Image Project reflection

I feel as the work I did for my images were accurate. It was kind of hard for me to think of things that I, myself could take pictures of for the “creative images.” Overall, I found this assignment interesting and fun!! I enjoyed seeing other peers work, seeing the images they picked and how they related to their topic was cool. This isn’t he first time trying to capture images to relate to a certain topic, but it was my first time trying to get the angles good and the quality right. I feel that I did a pretty good job, maybe if I continue to work on it I can progress.

Ethos, Pathos, and Logos played a role in the process of this assignment with us having to use the authors credibility, trying to bring out the emotions, and giving our reason as to why we chose the images. One person that I loved viewing was Marley Hoover. Her topic is about how depression is becoming more normalized. Both the founded images and creative images were well represented. Seeing how deep the pictures were just by looking at them was crazy to me, that shows a picture can say/show many different thoughts. I thought with the images she found and created were amazing, but with the way she captioned it was perfect. She was able to kind of connect and go deep with what the picture said and gave off.

I wanted to use this picture as a self-care type of vibe. Self-care is a HUGE need in your life. There are times where you’re in school and you’re very stressed out and your face starts to break out. Cleansing your face and just taking care of your outside appearance will help you feel better about yourself. Just take a night and draw a bubble bath and sip some wine.
“Never give up. Stay focused. Stay positive. Stay strong.” by deeplifequotes is licensed under CC BY-NC-SA 2.0
I chose to use this quote as a little motivation post. Everyone has their days where they are lacking motivation, whether it’s getting up for class or being productive that day. So i hope this will give you some hope and to not give up.

Creative Images

Image by Kinley Hite. February 19,2020. This picture represents sleep. In order to maintain a healthy lifestyle, especially in college you need to make sure you get enough rest. The amount of sleep you get will impact on how your day will be, if you get too much or not the right amount of sleep it could effect either how productive your day is or the amount of energy you’ll have.
Image by Kinley Hite. February 19,2020.This picture is the Whitlock building here on campus. The Whitlock building is a great resource to use while being on campus and enrolled in college. I used this building as a representation of help, this is a place that you can go to if you need any help as far from counseling for your mental health to getting the right advice for what you need to do to stay on track with your classes.
Image by Kinley Hite. February 19,2020. This image is of a Hydration Station in the Whitlock building at EKU. This represents hydration. Staying hydrated whether its water or Gatorade, it helps you more than you know. You need to have fluids in your body to help with energy and health issues.
Image by Kinley Hite. February 19,2020. This is humidifier represents a form of meditation. Performing meditation on a day to day basis or even when you just feel like you need a break, meditation can help you relieve stress and just allow your brain to just relax and be at peace.

The Powell Student Center has places that allow students to come and do any homework or assignments that need to get done but also to have your own privacy area.
Image by Kinley Hite. February 20,2020. This is a picture of art drawn by Marley Hoover, I used it as a representation of a way to get away from everything else in life. Everyone has a different way of expressing their emotions and what to do to relax and let go of some stress.
Image by Kinley Hite. February 20,2020. Coffee. Everyone loves coffee, it is something a lot of college students rely on. I chose to take a picture of coffee for my topic because it is something that can help you stay on track with what you’re doing. It also is very useful for college students if they need that extra boost of energy to get up and focus on what you need to do that day.
Image by Kinley Hite. February 20,2020. I chose to take a picture of a healthy food chose. This represents food. In order to stay healthy and energized you need to eat, preferably a healthy and nutritious meal. Food is a big problem for college students. We have limited (healthy) options being campus bound.
Image by Kinley Hite. February 20,2020. This is a picture of the Campus Rec Center at EKU. I used this to represent exercise. To maintain a healthy lifestyle you should at least try to exercise 3-4 times a week. Working out is a great way to stay healthy and burn off some extra fat that you want to lose.
Image by Kinley Hite. February 20,2020. This picture of a Journal represents another way people can express how they are feeling or how there day was. Using a journal is a way to help you feel good and safe, being able to write down your thoughts and experiences is helpful for stress or fear.

Bibliography Post #2

Hussain, Rafat, et al. “Physical and Mental Health Perspectives of First Year Undergraduate Rural University Students.” BMC Public Health, vol. 13, no. 1, Oct. 2013, pp. 1–11. EBSCOhost, doi:10.1186/1471-2458-13-848.

This cited source is an Article based source, I would believe to think this is a scholarly article. The author begins to talk about how there is evidence that shows a good amount of people experience poor physical health. The study was focused on mental and physical health of first year university students of 355 students, 244 females and 111 males.

With the author talking about this study that was performed and showing the results, makes this source a good reliable source of information. Dr Rafat Hussain is a public health physician with qualifications in medicine, public health, and epidemiology. Once I read her website, her qualifications and experience do apply to this topic I’m focusing on. This source helps identify all of the evidence of the study that was done and shows how many people deal with physical and mental health.

Malan, Hannah, et al. “Challenges, Opportunities, and Motivators for Developing and Applying Food Literacy in a University Setting: A Qualitative Study.” Journal of the Academy of Nutrition & Dietetics, vol. 120, no. 1, Jan. 2020, pp. 33–44. EBSCOhost, doi:10.1016/j.jand.2019.06.003.

This source is defined as an article, it could be considered a popular and a scholarly article. The article begins to talk about complex food environments could require a new set of skills and mindsets to maintain a healthy diet plan. Food literacy among college students is not well understood, although this study focused more on a range of challenges for college students to apply those skills in the university environment. There were 11 focus groups with 4 students each.

Being able to fully understand what this study was about and the outcome of it all is what makes me believe this is such a reliable source. Hannah Malan is PhD Candidate and graduate student researcher studying intervention strategies promoting healthy, sustainable food in institutional settings. She explores the effectiveness of using environmental sustainability, climate change, and more !! Looking at her Blog and blog posts she seems to be a very bright lady, her information posted is very informing.

What are some things that us college students can do to make sure we stay on top of things ?

How can we hold ourselves accountable ?

Library Reflection

This week my class had to go to the library to get more clarity on how to properly evaluate information. One of may things I had learned was that, every source you find has a purpose. There is a reason for the information existing. Good information is when it has reviews, complete enough for the problem, and a reliable source. Applying pictures and videos are another great way to evaluate information. Pictures are able to catch a million words, we quickly observe everything. When posting a picture on Instagram or Facebook , I make sure I stay true to who I am. Also it allows me to express myself in a picture if I feel as if i can not find a way to use words.

I am still trying to gather more information for my topic. I tend to be curious onto what exactly my main points should in this blog ( feedback and advice is welcome 🙂 ). I would like to possibly at some point put a bunch of info into a picture kind of idea. On another note , this bibliography assignment was a little confusing at the beginning but during class on Wednesday, I was able to gain clarity onto what I exactly need to write. I do like this assignment, but my concerns are more focused on the Information literacy evaluation, I found it hard for me to finish that section to my full potential due to not being able to find a reliable article focusing on the Author. However, being able to have access to CEC consultations is a plus. I was able to get help on what to do and she allowed me to work on my own then review over what i wrote.

Introducing Myself

Hello !

My name is Kinley Hite, I am 18 years old, I am from Louisville, Kentucky and currently enrolled at Eastern Kentucky University.

The main reason I am blogging publicly is because this an assignment for the English class I am in. Having this blog public is more than an assignment for me, I want to be able to be a resource for someone who is in the same boat as me ! Which is trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle living on a college campus !!

Some things I will most likely be talking about is, things you can do to avoid unhealthy situations, try to limit fast food intake with having those options while on campus, etc.

I am hoping that I can connect with people that are having the same struggles, wanting to maintain a healthy lifestyle but is stuck in certain situation to wear you do not have many resources to get a decent amount of “healthy foods.
